SCA Food Service Worker and SCA Food Service Client

At The Arc of San Diego, we are a team of diverse and dedicated people who are passionate about helping children and adults live the most fulfilling and independent lives possible. The SCA Food Service Worker or Client performs various tasks related to food service in a large Military Base Mess Hall setting. This includes preparing food and drink stations, setting up hot and cold food and drink bars, serving food, washing dishes using a commercial dishwasher, sweeping, mopping, and doing general cleaning. The worker is also responsible for sanitizing and cleaning the kitchen, dining room, and all serving equipment and areas. Success in this role is based on how well the SCA Food Service Worker/Client can carry out these tasks while following The Arc’s Vision, Mission, and Values in all interactions with team members, management, and customers.

Follow All Food Service Rules: Observe all rules, regulations, and guidelines for food service in the Military mess hall.

2. Report Problems: Follow procedures to report any incidents, hazards, accidents, or unsafe conditions to the immediate supervisor.

3. Serve Food Safely: Serve food according to established guidelines for serving size, food safety, and physical safety.

4. Replace Dishes and Silverware: Replace glassware, dishes, and silverware as needed.

5. Refill Condiments: Refill condiment containers regularly.

6. Clean Work Areas: Clean and sanitize utensils, equipment, and work areas, including windows, walls, tables, chairs, serving lines, and countertops.

7. Clean Floors: Sweep and mop floors throughout the mess hall area.

8. Clean Outside Areas: Clean outside areas, including the staff break area and areas around recycling and trash receptacles.

9. Remove Trash and Food Debris: Remove food debris and trash from eating and processing areas and dispose of them properly.

10. Take Dirty Dishes to Scullery: Remove dirty dishes, glasses, and silverware from bussing stations and transport them to the appropriate scullery.

Work in Different Positions: Work in one or more positions within the mess hall as needed.

12. Follow Cleaning Procedures: Follow policies and procedures for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces, utensils, dishes, equipment, etc.

13. Wash Dishes and Kitchen Items: Wash dishes, glassware, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils by hand or using appropriate equipment.

14. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

15. Maintain a Clean Work Environment: Maintain a neat, orderly, and safe work environment at all times.

16. Participate in Training and Meetings: Participate in assigned training, meetings, and other work-related initiatives.

17. Be Professional and Positive: Emulate The Arc of San Diego’s Vision, Mission, and Values in all daily interactions with team members, management, and customers, and maintain a positive, professional working relationship with co-workers and other employees at the work site.

18. Ensure Safety and Report Hazards: Ensure the safety and welfare of staff and clients and follow procedures to report any incidents, hazards, accidents, or unsafe conditions to your immediate supervisor.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Food Service Worker position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods, often for the duration of a shift.
  • Perform fine motor actions using hands, wrists, and fingers, including repetitive movements such as handling trays, dishes, and utensils.
  • Use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, utensils, and food items as part of daily duties.
  • Reach with hands and arms to access and place items on shelves, counters, or serving lines.
  • Talk, see, and hear to communicate with colleagues and customers, and to ensure food safety and quality standards are met.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as trays, containers, and boxes of food or supplies.
  • Stooping or crouching may be required to clean areas, pick up items, or access lower shelves.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include:

  • Close vision, for tasks such as cleaning utensils, dishes, and surfaces.
  • Distance vision, to assist with serving food and ensuring proper placement.
  • Peripheral vision, for maintaining situational awareness, especially in a busy, high-traffic environment.
  • Ability to adjust focus, as tasks may involve switching between different work areas.

Additionally, the employee must be able to:

  • Work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, particularly during meal times, while maintaining safety and cleanliness.
  • Adapt to extreme heat and cold environments, as the work areas may be subject to varying temperatures, particularly near cooking equipment or refrigeration units.
  • Work in wet conditions due to cleaning tasks and spills on floors.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely and appropriately, following procedures for mixing, applying, and disposing of chemicals used in the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, aprons, and safety footwear, as required for certain tasks.
  • Respond to loud environments; noise levels are typically moderate but may occasionally reach loud levels, requiring ear protection when necessary.
  • Push or pull carts, trays, or containers loaded with food, dirty dishes, or trash, weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in crowded conditions, especially during peak meal service times.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Prior experience in food service preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an MCRD Base Food Handler’s Card; training and certification provided upon hire and periodically thereafter.
